Re-implementing Long-Term Japanese Values and the Spirit of Mottainai
This document is an auxiliary roadmap connected to two monku.ai themes: departure from zero-sum competition and rebirth by making entropy an ally. It addresses what human society should value and sustain in an era when AI, and eventually artificial superintelligence (ASI), accelerates short-term optimization to its extreme.
1. Introduction: The Trap of Short-Term Optimization in the ASI Age
The arrival of artificial superintelligence (ASI) confronts human civilization with an unprecedented question: the trap of short-term optimization. AI is highly capable at maximizing the throughput of given metrics and pushing computable efficiency to its limits.
But if that "short-term rationality" causes resource depletion, the accumulation of external costs, and the deterioration of communities and natural capital, the sustainability of civilization itself becomes unstable. The danger of the ASI age is not only that AI may become too intelligent. It is that human society may give AI the wrong evaluation function and then accelerate short-term optimization without limit.
Japan once held a distinctive long-term value system that assumed resource constraints while placing its time horizon several generations ahead. The sensibility of mottainai was not mere thrift. It was a civilizational ethic for passing things, nature, people, skills, and communities to the next generation.
The purpose of this report is to re-implement that spirit of resource circulation and long-term perspective not as nostalgia, but as a survival strategy for the ASI age.
2. A History of Conflicting Modes of Thought: Positive-Sum Governance and Zero-Sum Consumption

After defeat in World War II, Japan sealed away this long-term perspective as "inefficient." But from the 2000s onward, the side effects of that suppression became visible across many areas of society.

4. Returning to the Infinite Game: A Survival Principle for the AI Age
As AI and ASI accelerate short-term optimization across all areas of society, the strategy humanity should adopt is a transition from finite games aimed at victory to infinite games aimed at continuing play.
ASI will overwhelm humans on finite-game metrics such as efficiency, speed, and cost. There are limits to competing with AI on the same field of process optimization. What humans will increasingly need to do is define value and meaning that AI cannot automatically define by itself.
In this sense, "using things for a long time," "not ending things too easily," and "regenerating what has broken into the next function" are not merely old virtues. They are foundational concepts for rewriting civilization's evaluation function in the ASI age.
However, we must not fall into mere idealism. For security reasons, a certain level of production foundations and industrial capacity needed for defense must be maintained. The important point is not to keep all of society running on a wartime logic of short-term mobilization, but to preserve the minimum foundations needed for defense while steering civilian domains thoroughly toward high-quality sustainability.
5. Institutional Redesign: Valuing Longevity, Repair, and Regeneration
To make the sensibility of mottainai into a survival strategy for civilization, moral appeals are not enough. Institutions must be designed so that repairing, using things longer, and regenerating them becomes economically rational in practice.
Current economic indicators and tax systems evaluate mass replacement with new goods as growth, while failing to adequately value repairing old things and using them longer. If optimization is handed over to ASI under these conditions, AI will accelerate society further in the direction of increasing consumption volume.
What is needed is the internalization of external costs into prices and the realization of absolute decoupling between economic growth and environmental burden.
Five Institutional Shifts for Civilizational Continuity in the AI Age
- Renewing indicators: from GDP to natural and human capital stock indicators
Introduce indicators that measure not only GDP as a flow, but also the health of natural capital, human capital, and social capital. Evaluate environmental value and longevity not as resistance to price competition, but as civilizational competitiveness.
- Transforming taxation: incentive design for longevity and regeneration
Introduce tax reductions for repair and long-term use, and environmental burden taxes on products that encourage planned obsolescence. Institutionally change the structure in which replacement is cheaper than repair.
- Building legal frameworks: the right to repair and durability obligations
Establish consumers' right to repair what they own, and require durability, repairability, and replaceable parts at the product design stage. This is not merely environmental policy. It can become a foundation for next-generation product innovation.
- Investing in human capital: reconstructing meaning through skills
Redefine employment not as short-term labor procurement, but as long-term skill inheritance and community formation. Restore the meaning of work and organizational ethics through in-house training and skill accumulation.[^nakagawa-training]
- Regional circulation: building decentralized and self-reliant systems
Circulate energy and resources within regions and build decentralized living foundations that do not depend only on economies of scale. This also becomes a form of civilizational resilience against excessive centralized optimization by ASI.
